  • R30,000 to the winner for use in expanding the young leader’s project or initiative for the benefit of the community that cultivated that young leader
  • R10,000 to the first person to have nominated the eventual winner of the prize (if the winner nominated him/herself first, this amount will be given to him/her).

How do I enter? Who can enter?

South Africans between the ages of 14 and 18 who have demonstrated academic promise and through their actions in solving pressing problems facing their communities or taking advantage of opportunities for the benefit of their communities, also demonstrated leadership and a passion for Africa, are invited to enter by downloading, completing and submitting the entry form. What do you mean by community?

A community can be an extended household, school, church or religious community, neighbourhood, town or city. In a case where an award is given but the definition of community is not clear, then the award winning youth will be asked to nominate 3 people to act as a committee responsible for the use and dispersion of the community component of the award.

I have a great idea of something that I would like to do. Can I apply?

The ALA Prize for Young Leaders will only be awarded to nominees who have actually implemented a project or initiative or achieved something that has benefited their community. Simply having an idea is not sufficient. The idea has to have been realized and be verifiable. Make your great idea into a reality and apply next year.
